If you have recently had your wisdom teeth extracted but are struggling to get a comfortable night’s sleep, the good news is that these difficulties are only temporary. While that may be reassuring, however, it doesn’t exactly help you get those much-needed z’s. If you’re trying to find a way to get some well-deserved shut eye, try these helpful tips so you can recharge and help your body heal.

Stick to a Schedule

One of the best ways to get a good night’s sleep following wisdom teeth removal is to stay on schedule with your bedtime and with your medication. Taking over the counter or prescription pain meds prior to hitting the hay will help ease the pain enough for your body to relax. You may want to try to sleep for as long as possible, or you can set an alarm when your next dose of medicine is due. Be sure to note the time of your last dosage so you can do the math and determine when you should take it again. Be sure to adjust your schedule if you miss a dose while sleeping.

Keep Your Head Up

Keeping your head elevated after your procedure will help slow bleeding and promote clotting. If you have gauze in your mouth, have someone wake you every 20 minutes to ensure that the gauze is still in place so that you do not accidentally swallow or choke on it.

You may also want to try sleeping on your side, as this will make it easier to keep your head elevated.

Follow Your Aftercare Instructions

While you’re awake, be sure to pay close attention to your aftercare instructions. Don’t drink from a straw, brush the incision area, smoke, eat or drink anything hot, or consume caffeine. These can all potentially prevent the incision from clotting and can even cause a dangerous and painful condition called dry socket.

Remember, it’s normal to struggle to get a good night’s sleep in the first day or so following your wisdom teeth extraction, but thankfully this should not be an issue for long. For the best results, follow these important tips and before you know it, you’ll be feeling well and rested once again!
